Narni underground

Umbria is known for its monuments, its town centres entrenched on hillsides and its scenery immersed in the greenery but there is also a more intimate, secret, underground part.

In Narni, the geographic centre of contemporary Italy, there is a city under the city which has recently come to light. It’s possible to go back in time to when Romans kept their water in deep reservoirs and let it run inside winding aqueducts, when Lombards fought against Byzantines and built completely frescoed hypogeum chapels or Benedictines created Romanesque churches over other more antique ones or finally, when the Dominicans locked up people charged with the crime of heresy in the dungeons of the Inquisition. A trip through history to relive unforgettable moments, it is an easy route for everyone.

“La Somma” Horse-riding Centre
“La Somma” horse-riding centre is one of the best riding centres in Umbria. In an extremely scenic setting surrounded by woods, valleys and mountains.

At the centre, beginners can learn the basics of horse-riding whilst expert riders will be helped to improve their style.

Junior riders can discover “the art” of horse-riding by playing games.

The stable has over 70 horses as well as ponies, which have been trained well enough to satisfy expert riders but are also calm enough so that riders that mount them for the first time, feel they can do so safely.

The mummies of Ferentillo
The Ferentillo mummies are very unusual and are of national and international interest; in fact, visitors come from all over Europe to see them.

It is the one and only phenomenon of its kind.

The mummification is entirely natural, due to particular micro-organisms found in the soil and climate conditions in the area where they are buried.

Mountain Biking
There is an excursion centre in Arrone called “the School of Mountain Biking”. There are many possible excursions favoured by the excellent position of the centre: cross charming paths in the heart of the Valnerina or on one of the many historical-artistic itineraries like Spoleto, Norcia and Cascia.

The centre has a large parking, a park on the banks of the river with tables and fireplaces, which are ideal for relaxing and picnics, changing rooms for men and women, a mountain bike wash and small workshop for quick repairs.

The centre in Arrone also provides a school for off-road cycling with federal instructors. Mtb school excursion centre 05031 Arrone TR via delle Palombare. Tel/fax 0744/287686 - Mobile 380.3088533.

Restaurants and pizzerias
In the Nera River Park area (where Arrone is to be found) organic cultivation is carried out. Typical products include oil, truffles and fresh-water fish, such as trout and crayfish. Not to mention the forest fruits, strawberries, raspberries and honey production.

Valnerina’s pork butcheries are famous and therefore there is an excellent production of cold meats and sausages; from ham to sausages to liver sausages.

The production of sheep’s milk cheese is also excellent. The cuisine is inspired by the local products: truffle omelettes and canapés, shrimps in a green sauce, prawn soup, cariole in a trout and black truffle sauce, rice soup with strigoli, grilled lamb served with chopped lard and herbs, boiled trout with truffles and the typical local sweet, panpepato (with chocolate, dried fruits and pepper).
